Securing the cytostatic pathway

Description

This project is part of the drive to secure the therapeutic management and care of patients receiving chemotherapy and/or biotherapy. High-risk medicines (HRM) are currently prepared by the hospital pharmacy under laminar flow. At the time of preparation, each bag of medication is labelled with the minimum information required to enable the nurse to administer the medication to the right patient. The labels are also barcoded with the READYMED module of the CATO software.. At the time of administration, the nurse scans the patient’s wristband and the barcode on the label of the chemo-biotherapy bag using the scanner. The aim is to increase the safety and traceability of drug administration right up to the patient’s bed.

Added value

This project provides better traceability of the entire chemo-biotherapy circuit, from the medical prescription, through pharmaceutical validation, production of the chemo-biotherapy bag and administration by the nurse.

Status

Currently being finalised.

Anne Otto
Head of Pharmacy (HRS)
"This project encourages interdisciplinarity between the IT department, the pharmacy and the oncology department and outpatient chemotherapy to improve the safety of cytostatics by implementing 100% traceability of cytostatic drugs, which are classified as high-risk drugs at the HRS."
Sophie Dias
Head of palliative care, oncology
"This project guarantees the security of the cytostatic pathway, with traceability of the entire chemo-biotherapy circuit, from the medical prescription, through pharmaceutical validation, production of the chemotherapy bag and administration by the nurse."
Véronique Wagner
Director of care for the visceral-oncology unit
"This initiative reflects our institutional commitment to the safety and well-being of our patients over the course of their therapeutic journey, while supporting national efforts to modernise and improve the accessibility of medical records through digitalisation."
