Print workshop

Description

The idea of this project is to partially restructure the art therapy studio by integrating a printing workshop with the aim of integrating it into everyday art therapy and day clinic activities.
The process of printing has accompanied my art therapy work since I started working at the day clinic in Esch-Alzette. However, it became increasingly clear that the hand printing process was limited to small formats and that it was difficult to achieve accurate printing results in this form. A printing roller for relief and gravure printing, a manual printing press for material printing and textile printing and a screen printing table significantly simplify the printing process and enable new applications in an art therapy context. With this addition to the studio in the day clinic in Esch-Alzette, the work in the studio has developed further. The former occupational therapy room thus became a very well-equipped studio for art therapy.

Added value

If patients find it difficult to engage with art therapy, access can be found through areas of interest such as comics, animé or other images. If the starting point is a known template for a work that is then produced independently, this can provide the necessary link to the work in the studio. In a first step, the template provides reassurance, which can then be used to look for a new challenge (e.g. the creation of the motif in linocut). As soon as the patient has arrived at the work process, a real joy in working and creating can develop, and fears and insecurities can be reduced.
Individual projects can also be put together very well in the group, for example, different printing plates and materials can be combined with each other in the letterpress process when experimenting together. Cooperative work promotes a sense of community within the group.

Status

Work has been possible in the “print workshop” (Hôpitaux Robert Schuman) since September 2022.

Eva Blümm
Art therapist
"Setting up the studio immediately showed how varied and enriching working with professional materials and specialised machines can be. Patients use all printing techniques individually (letterpress, intaglio, screen printing, material printing) and learn perseverance through independent and project-based work, experience self-efficacy during the printing process and achieve self-confidence through successful printing results."
