Orthopedic surgery – Mako® robot
Description
The Robert Schuman Hospitals are the pioneering healthcare institution in Luxembourg for robotic orthopedic surgery, having acquired the first MAKO® robot in 2016. This navigation system first provides a personalized surgical plan tailored to the patient's unique anatomy. This 3D model of the knee is then used to guide the surgeon during knee or hip replacement surgery. The system helps avoid the penetration of surgical instruments into dangerous areas where they could cause injuries, such as to nerves or blood vessels. It allows for the creation of a geometric zone within which the surgeon has complete control over their maneuvers, corresponding to the portion of the bone to be removed for the proper implantation of a prosthesis.
Added value
For patients, the use of the MAKO® robot offers advantages over conventional orthopedic surgery, including greater precision and anatomical placement; more natural joint movement; reduced hospitalization time, recovery time, and quicker return to normal activities; muscle preservation; smaller incisions; reduced risk of infection; less pain; minimal blood loss and a reduced likelihood of blood transfusion; and a lower risk of blood clots.
Status
Operational at Robert Schuman Hospitals since 2016. Extension of the project in 2024 with the installation of a second robot and the latest digital applications.
